Sommelier Vanessa Trevino BoydVanessa Treviño Boyd “cut her wine teeth” in Chicago working with an all-American list at Chef Bruce Sherman’s acclaimed North Pond Café. After international travel while a theatre student at Northwestern University, her experiences fostered an understanding of the relationship between geography, culture and wine. In 2000 Ms. Treviño Boyd moved to New York City to pursue an education in the culinary arts and sommelier studies.

In New York she managed a wine list for one of the first greenmarket-driven chefs, Diane Forley of Verbena and Bar Demi; the latter featuring a Food & Wine magazine award-winning selection of half bottles. In 2002 Ms. Treviño Boyd joined the Morrell family of Morrells Wine Auctions to open their namesake restaurant, where she directed a 1,200-selection wine list.

In 2004 Ms. Treviño Boyd joined the Tokyo-based Foodscope to direct the wine, sake and spirits programs at MEGU, a 250-seat restaurant that paved the way for a number of highly ingredient-driven Japanese restaurants. In the Spring of 2006 she opened a second location with a 650-selection list and a hand-selected assortment of small-batch spirits. In particular, Ms. Treviño Boyd brought recognition to the potentials of Champagne, Germany and the wines of Burgundy paired with Japanese cuisine. Both wine lists were awarded consecutively by Wine Spectator magazine during her four year-tenure.

In 2008 she collaborated on the opening of a new venture for the Alain Ducasse Group in New York. Adour Alain Ducasse in the 4-Star, 5-Diamond St. Regis Hotel boasts an 1800-selection wine list, a team of four Sommeliers, three New York Times stars and two coveted Michelin stars in the American guide.

Ms. Treviño Boyd’s work has been recognized in Food Arts, Santé, The New York Times and Wine & Spirits where she has been a member of the import wine tasting panel for eight years. She was a participant in that which culminated in the controversial Wine Trials book and is a long-standing member of some of the first & finest internet-based gastronomical discussion forums: eGullet and Steve Plotniki’s Opinionated About. Her work will be featured along with America’s top Sommeliers in the upcoming On Tasting Wine (Little, Brown, 2011) by James Beard award-winning journalists Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg. In 2010 she was inducted into Les Dames d’Escoffier International.

Ms. Treviño Boyd has a B.S. degree in Performance Studies from Northwestern University, an Advanced certificate in Viticulture and Vinification from the American Sommelier Association and is a graduate of the Chef’s Training Program at the Natural Gourmet Institute. She has been a five-time Sommelier at the nation’s only large-scale, prestigious celebration of the wines of Burgundy, La Paulée. She resides in Houston, Texas, where she is the Beverage Director at acclaimed Philippe Restaurant + Lounge.
